Meet Jane

Jane Robb joined us as our Business Support Manager and is approaching her first year anniversary at WeConnect Energy, learn a bit more about Jane in the piece below.

October 26, 2023

Tell me a bit about yourself and your background:

I have worked in the recruitment industry for a solid 30 years, prior to that in the hospitality industry but always in a Finance role. I've lived in Central Scotland my entire life, primarily working in Glasgow until I recently started in Edinburgh. My first job after college was through a YTS (Youth Training Scheme), so I am showing my age now!

I started work in an accountancy firm where I moved into the payroll department, then from there to Stakis (now Hilton) and then I joined a large recruitment company where I was the Head of the Payroll. I took some time out in 2022 to decide what I wanted to do next and landed in recruitment again when Richard (CEO) brought me onboard, I have been working as the Business Support Manager ever since.

What did you find to be the most challenging aspect of the rebrand?

Getting everyone on the same page and being decisive! We went round in circles a few times on several things when there was really no need to, so just believing in ourselves and going for it is something we are now mindful of. Keeping decision making teams to only those really required helps solve this, and is something we actively do within the business.

What’s a piece of advice you’d pass onto someone who wants to get into Business Support?

Some people would say that a career in Finance is not the most exciting, and I literally fell into it, but I enjoy it and find it very dynamic. It can be challenging but also very rewarding and my excel skills have greatly improved over the years!

How has your first year at WeConnect Energy been?

With almost one year under my belt, I can safely say that my time here has been great. My role at WeConnect Energy has me overseeing several departments so it has been an enjoyable and testing learning experience. The teams have all been great in welcoming me and taking time to help me understand the business and the processes within.

What’s a typical day like for you?

In one word – dynamic. With the business undergoing a transformation, it is all about ensuring that we are getting the normal day-to-day tasks done, and we are also looking to the future and what we can do to improve our processes. There's a ton of variety in what I do on a daily basis and I thrive on that. In between managing the team, I am involved in several other business-wide initiatives and have been involved in almost every aspect of the business since I first joined.

What are you enjoying the most about your job so far?

The team, everyone is really nice, and their warmth and friendliness create a wonderful atmosphere that fosters support. It's a pleasure to work with such an amazing group of individuals who not only excel in their roles, but also make every day at the office a delightful experience.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Own it!

People tend to have a fear in taking ownership of their mistakes, but things always come out in the wash as they say! So, I am a firm believer in taking ownership of my mistakes and the consequences of them. The additional benefit of this is that you will get a reputation for being honest, and transparency is a key leadership quality and something that is essential in a company of our size and in our line of business.

What do you get up to when you are not working?

Walking the dog and reading and recently I have started yoga which is helping me find my zen. To counter this I am also partial to enjoying the odd glass or two of wine!
